Plus: How Apple thinks you'll use VR

Happy Saturday early birds! Today we're discussing the new juicy details about Apple's VR headset.Estimated read time: 1.5 minutes

Apple insiders have dropped some juicy details to The Information, here's what they had to say.

  • Why it matters to you: Apple is betting on the headset to be their most revolutionary product in a decade that they expect to have a similar impact as the iPhone and personal computer.

Why you can trust The Information: They're a highly reputable Silicon Valley news websites that breaks stories before most news outlets. Catch up quick: Apple is working on the next iPhone style product and it's a VR/AR goggles set to be unveiled sometime in 2023.The tl;dr: Apple's headset product is a mixed reality headset (both AR/VR) that will be primarily used for videoconferencing and other business applications. However, regular iPhone apps can also be run on the headset. The details: The product is an AR/VR headset that allows the user to toggle between the real and virtual world via a dial (similar to the Apple Watch's) and has a power pack attached to your waist. Speakers are included, but Apple wants you to purchase a new pair of AirPods so they can connect to the headset. The expected primary use case of the product is for videoconferencing with virtual avatars. Expected cost: $3,000.Robin's thoughts: Expensive clunky crap.

  • Why: For most businesses, VR has no appeal outside of being a cool thing you use once. Most big companies and tech companies are operating under some form of hybrid work and can tolerate using Zoom. Take a look at how well Meta's Horizons Workrooms is doing. Where VR does have appeal is with creatives and especially individuals in the industrial space as they have the most use for these products..

The big picture view: This headset is a first step and your first step is never your best step. I'm not expecting Apple to sell many of these headsets but the information they gain from launching this product could help them chart a long term plan to make a really great headset. The bottom line: If the rumors are true, this device is nothing impressive but a first step.
